In a country like Pakistan where millions of children lack access to quality education, it is easy to feel paralyzed by the degree of the problem. The numbers are daunting, the infrastructure gaps real and the inequality heartbreaking. But sometimes, all it takes is one small act of kindness to begin reshaping the entire system.
For us, that act began with something as simple and powerful as a book.
• A Seed of Change
The early days of Providentia Books Foundation were not marked by a grand vision; the idea was simple: collect unused books from people who had more than they needed and pass them on to children who had none.
We began by reaching out to in your own circles to donate books lying idle on dusty shelves. The hope was that even a single storybook or textbook could open new worlds for a child who had never read one before. What we didn’t expect was the extent of the response. Cartons of books started arriving – textbooks, novels, encyclopedias, journals as well as maps. Some were used, others brand new but it was a powerful reminder of how much goodwill exists in our society and how often it just needs to be directed. As we sorted, labeled and delivered books to underprivileged schools that lacked even the most basic reading materials, we realized something profound: we were not just handing out books but were delivering new possibilities. For many children, these books became symbols of value and a glimpse into a larger world.
That’s how Providentia was born – not from an institution but from intention.
• Beyond the Book
As our presence grew, so did our understanding of the deeper challenges these students faced. Again and again, we encountered the same reality: children who were eager to learn but were burdened by lack of access. Many came barefoot and in tattered uniforms; many shared a single pencil. A schoolbag was a luxury unknown and a lunchbox totally unheard of. And so, we broadened our mission. Today, Providentia is no longer just about books. It is about equipping students with the dignity, confidence, and tools they need to succeed. That includes:
1. Uniforms to help students walk into classrooms with pride
2. Stationery kits packed with essentials – pens, pencils, sharpeners, geometry tools
3. Schoolbags, water bottles and lunchboxes to support daily comfort and preparedness
4. Learning kits tailored to age groups and educational levels
Our goal is no longer defined by the number of donations, it is defined by the impact on the whole learner.
• A Vision Rooted in Compassion
Much of Providentia’s spirit comes from the unwavering commitment of its founder, Amaani Sehgal who at just 13, began volunteering at The Citizen’s Foundation (TCF). What she saw changed her forever, bright, talented children were held back not by ability, but by circumstances.
Providentia became the living, growing expression of that promise.
But Amaani never set out to do it alone. From day one, the goal was to build a movement rooted in empathy, driven by collaboration and strengthened by the belief that sustainable change only happens when communities lead the charge.
Building Networks of Hope Providentia now operates in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar. Our operations are powered by a digital platform that allows donors to list items, schools to request support and volunteers to stay engaged all in one place. This technology-driven approach makes giving more seamless and scalable.
We’ve partnered with over 70 schools, including Roots Millennium, Beaconhouse, The Educators and St. Michael’s Convent School.
These institutions have done more than host donation drives; they have nurtured a culture of generosity, encouraging students to take ownership of social change. We also collaborate with 22 NGOs and low-income schools across Sialkot, Jhelum, Rawalpindi, and other cities. These local partnerships are vital as they help us understand the needs of the community and tailor our programs accordingly. Through these collaborations, we’ve set up 27 reading corners and mini-libraries in schools that previously had none.
Our impact has also been amplified through partnerships with leading publishers like Oxford University Press, Liberty Books and the National Book Foundation, which provide access to high-quality reading materials.
So far, we’ve collected over 63,000 books and successfully donated more than 61,000, directly impacting classrooms and community centers throughout Pakistan.
• More Than Materials
At Providentia, we know that real transformation comes not just from resources but from building emotional and intellectual connections. That’s why we also invest in experiences that inspire and empower.
We organize storytelling sessions, where volunteers read aloud to children and help spark a love for language. Our awareness seminars create space for dialogue on issues like equity, empathy and the power of education. And through certificate campaigns, we celebrate the generosity of young donors – affirming that giving is just as important as receiving.
Providentia also welcomes interns from institutions like IQRA University and the University of South Asia, giving students hands-on experience in community development, social entrepreneurship and grassroots education work. These internships are more than résumé builders – they are eye-opening journeys that connect theory to impact.
• Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, our work is far from over. We are preparing to launch new initiatives that include:
1. Literacy workshops to support reading comprehension and creative writing
2. Digital learning programs to reach students in remote or underserved areas
3. Community libraries that offer safe, inspiring learning spaces beyond school hours
4. Teacher support kits to empower educators to succeed in the classroom
We are also exploring mentorship programs, mobile libraries and parent-engagement models because we know that true educational uplift requires a village.
• Why It Matters
Every single book, every pencil, every water bottle we give away carries a deeper message:
You are seen. You are not forgotten. Your dreams matter. In a world too often divided by class, geography and opportunity, these small gestures of solidarity remind children that they are not alone. And sometimes, that’s enough to change the trajectory of a life because when a child feels seen and supported, learning becomes possible. Confidence takes root. Futures begin to shift.
